The Ahero Irrigation Scheme in Kisumu County remains an important centre of rice production and a key contributor to the local agricultural economy. The scheme currently has about 10,810 acres under irrigation, supporting approximately 30,000 beneficiaries within the scheme area. Rice remains its main crop, with annual production estimated at over 58,000 tonnes.
Despite its importance, Ahero continues to face challenges including ageing infrastructure, water management difficulties and high pumping costs. Recent inspections by the National Irrigation Authority have focused on improving pumping stations and addressing challenges raised by farmers.
To improve efficiency, the government is pursuing the solarisation of Ahero's pumping system. Solar-powered irrigation is expected to reduce electricity costs, improve pumping reliability and support more sustainable agricultural production. The rehabilitation programme also targets the expansion of rice production by bringing an additional 1,000 acres in the Kobongo area under cultivation.
New pumping infrastructure is also being introduced to improve water supply. A recently installed pump at Ahero has a capacity of approximately 1,100 litres per second, with the potential to support increased rice production and more reliable irrigation.
